For arts, science or industry? The tense tale of the foundation of Manchester’s science museum

This talk explores the long history of the foundation of Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum. I will demonstrate how wider trends in civic commemoration, regional rivalry with Liverpool and beyond, and perceptions of the industrial city after the ‘shock’ era informed the eventual form and location of the 1960s museum.
