My Research
My practice-as-research PhD project will focus and reflect on the key points that have arisen from current discourse around the co-working non-human animal and human animal relationship. By weaving together case studies on animals that perform roles in biotherapies, in theatre, visual art and in the military, this project will deliver a series of performance art works involving the different species working in biotherapies.
Drawing parallels between their different work environments and contexts, we can begin to explicate the ability of animals to provide wellbeing and improve human health through the ‘work/labour’ they perform. In presenting these ideas, the research intends to emphasise and honour the working life of animals, highlighting the potential of interspecies collaboration across the specific fields of contemporary performance, animal therapy and biotherapies.
Supervised by Dr Simon Parry (School of Art, Language and Culture) and Dr Robert Kirk (Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine) at The University of Manchester.
